Southern, possibly Southwest Virgina, desk and bookcase, walnut primary, pine secondary, constructed in two sections. The upper section with a projecting cornice over two glazed doors opening to reveal four shelves; the lower section with a slant lid having battened ends. Slant front lid opens onto two pull-out slides to reveal an interior fitted with three (3) central pigeon holes flanked by two (2) shaped pigeonholes over two (2) tiers of dovetailed drawers. Desk with four graduated dovetailed drawers and wooden pulls, molded base and bracket feet. Top measures: 46 1/2" H x 44" W x 13 1/4" D. Base measures: 40 3/4" H x 38 1/8" W x 19 1/2" D. 87 1/4" total H. 2nd Qtr. 19th century.

Condition
Refinished surface. Patch to upper section right door upper hinge. Wood shrinkage noted around both hinges of the fall front, losses to the right hinge area, patches on both sides above lopers, patch to second drawer of desk. Lock to slant front absent, replaced by a patch. Interior with scattered stains and use wear. Diamond patches to each desk drawer in place of escutcheons, drawer sides built up, backboards show evidence of prior removal and re-installation.
