Spanish Colonial Cuzco School oil on canvas, laid on board painting depicting a saint, possibly Saint Dominic, wearing a gilt foliate embroidered priest's robe, his left hand holding the hilt of a sword and his right index finger pointing to his temple with a faint halo visible around his head. Labels en verso for past owner Mrs. Homer B. Millard and framer Paul Arlt, Washington DC. Housed in a simple wood painted wood framed with a beveled velvet mat. Sight: 21 7/8" H x 18 1/8" W.  Framed: 28 5/8" H x 25 5/8" W.

PROVENANCE: Private Memphis Collection, by descent from Mary Millard, the first wife of Lt. Col. Homer Behne Millard, Jr. Note: Oregon native Homer Millard founded the prestigious Millard Preparatory School for West Point which operated from 1925 - 1948 in Washington, D. C. and later in Millard School in Langlois, Oregon. Lt. Col. Millard also served as Executive Officer to the Secretary General of the War Crimes Tribunal in Nuremberg, Germany from 1946-1947.

Condition

Canvas has been laid on board. Scattered pinprick areas of paint exfoliation and abrasions. Evidence of canvas rubbing on old stretchers to both vertical margins. Light overall grime.
