Stephen Luke Iwasko (Ukrainian/American, 1883-1972), folk art bas relief carved bust length portrait of President George Washington, with carved sides simulating a frame. Lower edge of frame with carved title and signature, "George Washington Carved by Stephen L. Iwasko". Circa 1930. Sight: 19" H x 15 1/2" W. Frame: 22" H x 18 1/2" W.
Note: a carved joint portrait of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington by Stephen Iwasko is in the collection of the American Folk Art Museum. Little else is known about Iwasko, a Ukrainian immigrant who served in WWI and WWII and lived in Ohio for many years prior to his death in California at the age of 89.
Condition
Overall excellent condition. Enclosed under glass that may or may not be original; glass has a small chip to upper left edge. Outer frame may or may not be original and exhibits some water spotting.
