Tennessee beaten discuit board and cover in old blue and cream paint on poplar, with limestone slab. Old square nail construction. Three-board hinged cover with rounded edges lifts to reveal a central well with removable old honed limestone slab, surrounded by plain sides and supported on four substantial square legs. 33 in. H x 27 in. W x 25 in. D. Third quarter of the 19th century. 

Condition

Case with surface wear throughout; legs worn with some possible minor loss to height of the front right leg. Chips and staining to limestone. 

Provenance

Private Middle Tennessee collection. Purchased from descendants of Gilliam Underwood of Wilson County, TN (b. 1800) who had a farm on the Cumberland River from the 1830s. The farm was inherited by Alfred A. Hance Underwood (b. 1822) and then by Alfred's son Thomas Underwood (b. 1852). A file of genealogical information on the Underwood family is available to the winning bidder.
