Tiffany & Co. Sterling Silver mounted cut glass crystal claret pitcher or ewer, the flared silver rim with wave design to lower edge and area just below the spout with engraved presentation inscription, "To Isaac L. Leucht from his friend Elkan Naumberg 1844 January 25th 1904." Crystal body decorated with vertical columns of notched and etched floral designs. C form handle with diamond cut accents. Height: 10 1/4 in. Circa 1900. Note: Rabbi Isaac L. Leucht (1844-1914) was born in Darmstandt, Germany, and emigrated to the US, becoming assistant Rabbi in the Eden Street Synagogue in Baltimore before taking over the ministry of the Rampart Street Synagogue in New Orleans. He was credited as one of the main forces that helped build what would become known as the Touro Synagogue at the corner of St. Charles and Berlin Streets. Elkan Naumburg (1834-1924) was also born in Germany and came to the US in 1850. He became a partner in the clothing firm of Naumburg, Kraus, Lauer & Company. After the firm was dissolved in 1893, Naumburg founded the banking house of E. Naumburg and Co., which specialized in advancing loans to business enterprises. A lover of music, he established and endowed the free summer concert programs at New York City's Central Park in 1905, and contributed the funds for the park's band shell. He also gave liberally to other philanthropies. (Source: The Jewish Virtual Library, and Emanuel El, Volume XXXVIII, Number 7, 19 June 1914). A packet of copies of research information about Naumberg is available to the winning bidder.
