Important Tennessee Appalachian Exposition 1911 Sterling Silver Agricultural Premium Pitcher, awarded at the event to Peacock's Pride for "Stallions or Mares Three Years Old or Under," by the American Saddle Horse Breeders Association. The pitcher, of tall baluster form, features an engraved standing horse figure within the association's logo to one side and award inscription verso, flaring reeded spout, C scroll handle, and gadroon banding at shoulder and foot. Marked to the underside for Whiting, Sterling, 2328, 6 pints. 14 5/8 in. H. 40.59 oz troy. Note: The Appalachian Expositions, also known as the Appalachian Exhibitions, were held in Knoxville in 1910 and 1911 in what is now known as Chilhowee Park. Designed to promote the idea of "The New South," the fairs demonstrated progress in Southern industry and commerce, and advocated for conservation of the region's natural resources. Attending dignitaries included President Taft (who spoke in 1911) and former President Theodore Roosevelt (who spoke in 1910).  Nine major buildings were created to house displays and attractions. The Expositions featured several livestock and horse competitions, horse shows, racing and breeding displays, along with the first airplane landing in East Tennessee (on Cal Johnson's racetrack) and art exhibits featuring the work of artists such as Catherine Wiley and Lloyd Branson.
