19th century portrait of a lady, possibly by Isaac Sheffield (American, 1798-1845) or Nelson Cook (American, 1808-1892), oil on canvas, circa 1830. Depicts a lady with black hair, depicted wearing a black dress with narrow band of lace at the collar and sleeves, a floral decorated brooch, gold ring, and a long narrow gold chain. The subject is seated in a red chair set against a red drape with column and indistinct landscape beyond. Unsigned. Later stained and molded wood frame. Canvas - 30"H x 24"W. Frame - 35"H x 29"W. Note: we wish to thank Thom Miller, independent scholar and keeper of a website devoted to the portraits of Nelson Cook, for pointing out similarities between this painting and works by Cook.

Condition

Overall very good condition with old wax lining. A few scattered minute spots of touchup to subject's face and chest are visible under UV light, along with a few slightly larger spots to dress and background. 1" repaired tear at lower right edge, background. Some spotting, possible overcleaning upper left corner, cloud area near drape. Frame is likely later and has scattered wear and small abrasions.
