Oil on canvas painting of a girl who embraces a small dog in an outdoor setting, after Sir Joshua Reynolds's (British, 1723-1792) c. 1775-6 painting of Jane Bowles in The Wallace Collection, London (Inv. no. P36). With Hunter Museum of Art, Chattanooga, TN inventory label affixed to back of frame. Housed in an ornate giltwood frame with name plate with attribution to Reynolds. Sight: 35 1/4 in. H x 27 1/4 in. W. Framed: 43 1/4 in. H x 35 in. W. 19th century. 

Canvas has been lined. With stable craquelure throughout plus areas of cupping and losses along right sight edge. Several scratches or abrasions, largest along left side of sight area, 9 inches long, and to upper right, 2 1/2 inches long. Localized areas of retouching and inpainting from multiple restoration campaigns, inpainting primarily to aging cracks and especially around head of girl, largest to upper left of head, 5 inch x 1/2 inch. See UV photography. Frame with scattered abrasions and areas of cracking to gilt, especially to corners. 1 1/2 x 1/4 inch area of loss to gilt along left side of frame.
