Spanish School, late 19th to early 20th century, oil on canvas portrait of a youthful dark haired person in three quarter view, wearing a red neck tie, brown shawl, and spotted shirt, against a dark, indistinct background. Unsigned. Housed in an ornate rose-carved parcel gilt frame. Sight: 21 1/2 in. H x 17 1/2 in. W. Frame: 28 1/2 in. H x 24 1/2 in. W.
Condition
Painting has been cut down to fit in the frame. Two 8 inch long creases to canvas visible in raking light, one across subject's face and right eye, the other extending from the top right edge into the background. A few scattered tiny flakes. About a half dozen spots of retouch to background, up to 1" long, and a C shaped 2 inch spot of retouch or repair to tip of subject's hair. A few chips to frame, approx. 1/4 in. or smaller.
Provenance
Private West Tennessee collection. Brought from Spain in 1925 by Ambassador at Large Norman H. Davis, by descent to his brother, Tennessee Congressman Ewin L. Davis, by descent to the present consignor (Congressman Davis's great-granddaughter).
