Manner of Alfred Jacob Miller (American, 1810-1874), ink and oil sketch on canvas depicting a mountain man, possibly a fur trader, seated with bag slung over his shoulder, against an indistinct and partially unfinished background. Unsigned. Partial label en verso of stretcher seems to refer to a business, possibly an art supply business, with articles "always on hand," in proximity to the "Manchester Art Union". The painting has a 20th century backing board with reference to the "Victor Spark?" Gallery and shipping/crate information. Canvas - 12"H x 9 1/2"W. Later giltwood molded frame - 18 1/2"H x 16"W.

Condition

Original canvas affixed to stretchers with square nails. Some abrasions to perimeter of canvas from framing materials. Examination under UV light shows a small area of overpaint to beard area and patches to possible pin holes at each of the four corners. Overall very good condition.

Provenance

The estate of Ann H. Wells, Nashville, Tennessee.
