Four (4) Emma Clary Webb Peoples (Tennessee, 1878-1956) watercolor, charcoal, and pastel on paper portraits of African American subjects, including one (1) portrait of a man identified en verso as Leo Avery, Asheville, NC, dated 1933 in lower center; one (1) charcoal drawing of a young boy with study en verso; one (1) pastel and charcoal seated portrait drawing of a woman holding a child or doll inscribed "To Carlynn & Ha... Clary Web..."; and one (1) pastel and pencil drawing of a woman in a blue hat and garment inscribed en verso "Cherry Point, NC". All works initialed "CWP" and/ or signed in lower margin, three (3) inscribed "original" en verso. All hinge mounted on top edge to mats. Sights ranging from 5 12" H x 4" W to 7 1/2" H x 5 3/4" W. All mats measuring 10" H x 8" W. Biography: Emma Clary Webb Peoples was born in Nashville, TN. She married the head of a Tennessee boarding school, and they moved together to Asheville, NC in the late 1920s, remaining there until 1943. She was active as an artist, submitting photographs to the Nashville, Banner and exhibiting her watercolors in Asheville and Pennsylvania. She was well known for creating portraits of African American sitters she encountered throughout her life.

Condition

All works hinge mounted on upper edge. All in overall very good condition. Portrait of a young boy with two vertical crease lines down center.
