Browne (Phiz), published by Bradbury and Evans, London, 1848. Hardcover octavo, 624 top edge gilt pages, with engraved frontispiece, title page, and thirty-eight additional plates. Original Serial Cover No. IV, dated July 1870 tipped in to front matter pages, green cloth blind-stamped covers and spine laid down to back matter pages. Original Serial Cover No. XVIII, March tipped in to front matter pages, original olive green cloth blind-stamped covers and spine laid down to back matter pages. Note: This copy includes several first issue points: Capt. Cuttle's hook on his left arm on title vignette; half-title page is present; p. xv, no page entry for the frontispiece and vignette, and no quotation marks around "the Party" line 2; p.14, aint has no apostrophe, ten lines from the bottom; p. 26, line 11 has misspelling "fidgetty"; p. 40, "shewed" and "shew" instead of "showed" and "show"; p. 284, "Delight" instead of "Joy", fifth and sixth lines from the bottom; and p. 582, the last full line has no full stop. 2nd item: HARD TIMES. L. Fildes, published by Chapman and Hall, London, 1870. Hardcover octavo, 190 top edge gilt pages, with engraved portrait frontispiece, title page, twelve additional plates, eight line errata page, one double-sided advertisement back advertisement page for Dickens's Works and a 32 page "A Catalogue of Books Published by Chapman and Hall", dated August 31, 1870. Original Serial Cover No. IV, dated July 1870 tipped in to front matter pages, green cloth blind-stamped covers and spine laid down to back matter pages. 4th item: HUNTED DOWN: A STORY, First Edition, First Issue, by Charles Dickens, published by John Camden Hotten, London, 1870. Hardcover 16mo, 89 top edge gilt pages with engraved title page. Original green pictorial tipped in to back matter pages with publisher's catalogue. 5th item: THE STORY OF LITTLE DOMBEY, First Edition, by Charles Dickens, published by Bradbury and Evans, London, 1858. Hardcover 16mo, 121 top edge gilt pages. Original green pictorial laid down to back matter pages. All volumes rebound by Riviere and Son, London in red morocco leather with gilt-stamped covers and spine, five raised hubs, gilt dentelle with dark green paper pastedowns and endpapers, ex libris plates to interior of front covers. Ranging in size from 6 3/4" H x 4 1/2" W x 5/8" D to 9 1/2" H x 6 1/4" W x 2 1/4" D.

Condition

Covers in overall very good condition with wear to hinges, corners slightly bumped. Pages in overall good, legible condition with toning/toning impressions, acid burn, scattered foxing spots, scuffs, creases, few pencil marks, light handling wear. Some pages unevenly cut. Plates are collated. 1st item: All plates are present, however "Secret intelligence" faces p. 517 instead of p. 516. 2nd item: All plates are present, however "At the Piano" faces p. 45 instead of p.44; "Mr. Crisparkle is Overpaid" faces p. 73 instead of p. 72; and "Mr. Grewgious Experiences a New Sensation" faces p. 156 instead of p. 157. 4th item: Introduction page with 1/4" to top edge of page. Some pages to publisher's catalogue appear to have been tipped in out of numerical order.
