FEEDING THE MIND, London: Chatto & Windus, 1907. 31pp. With an introduction by English hymn writer and clergyman, William H. Draper. A lecture by Lewis Carroll (Charles Dodgson) delivered to a public audience of clergy in Derbyshire in Oct. 1884. After the speech, Dodgson gave the script to Draper, who went on to have the work published several years later. First edition, having previously appeared of Harper's Monthly Magazine, New York, May 1906, pp. 937-9. Originally issued in grey wrappers lettered and decorated in red and black, bound in at rear.
Note: Lillian May (Stokes) Gillespie (1869-1915) was an independently wealthy socialite from the Stokes family of New York, a line of enormously successful financiers and merchants.
Condition
Each in fair condition with Gillespie's bookplate to inside front boards; front boards separated from all except "Three Sunsets"; some spine labels loose or absent; leather with minor areas of loss; "Rhyme..." with flaking leather and tape reinforcement.
