After Joachim Beuckelaer (Flemish, c. 1535-1575) oil on canvas painting of a seated Flemish market vendor who wears a red coat and holds a goose with her right hand. At left, a girl stands behind a large basket filled with fruits and vegetables while additional vegetables rest behind the woman at right. After Beuckelaer's 1561 painting in the collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. Erroneously inscribed "Napolitian [Neopolitian] Market-Woman" and "Painted about 1539" to stretcher along with name "G. B. Be[c/r?]tano (possibly in reference to the 16th. c. Italian painter and architect Giovanni Battista Bertano/i) and inscribed "J. Beuckelaer - Market Woman" to back of frame. Housed in an ornate modern wormy giltwood frame with outset corners. Sight: 39 in. H x 29 in. W. Framed: 49 1/2 in. H x 39 1/4 in. W. 18th century or earlier. Note: The Kunsthistorisches Museum notes that the original painting is considered to be Beuckelaer's earliest.

Condition

Canvas has been relined. With retouching from mutilple restoration campaigns primarily to faces, largest to head of girl. See U/V photography.
