French School, circle of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867), oil on canvas portrait of a woman, possibly Cleopatra. She wears a crown and veil, with her head and eyes cast down, while holding a mirror encircled by an asp. Spurious signature "Ingres" lower left. Housed in an antique giltwood and composition frame with egg and dart and beaded moldings. Stretcher: 21 1/2 in. H x 18 1/2 in. W. Frame: 31 1/2 in. H x 28 in. W. 19th century.

Condition

Out of frame inspection reveals the canvas has been lined. UV light inspection shows area of repair and retouch at subject's right ear, scattered small spots of repair and retouch to background, and repair and retouch to a horizontal line running the full width of the painting about two inches from the lower edge. Frame has several noticeable areas of loss and repair, up to 3 in.
