Attributed to Ella Sophonisba Hergesheimer (American/Nashville, 1873-1943) oil on canvas still life painting depicting a bouquet of yellow roses against a neutral background. Signed "E.H. Hergesheimer, 1891" in red, lower right corner. Inscribed "From the original painting by J. Bapcinick" Housed in a period ornate giltwood frame with foliate decoration. Sight: 13 12" H x 19 1/4" W. Biography: A great-great-granddaughter of Charles Willson Peale, Hergesheimer studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts under William Merritt Chase and Cecilia Beaux. She won numerous awards and was judged the best pupil of her senior class. Hergesheimer also studied in Madrid and in Paris, where in a single year, four of her paintings were selected to hang at the Paris Salon. In 1907, Hergesheimer was commissioned to paint a portrait in Nashville, and decided to make it her home. She was acclaimed for her sensitive portraits of prominent citizens, landscapes, and still lifes, and was well regarded as a printmaker. In overall good condition with no visible retouching. One area of abrasion in upper center. Frame with separation in upper right corner, some light gilt losses.
