Batsell Moore (American/Tennessee, 1911-2010) oil on canvas large painting depicting Haynes Haven, the landmark equestrian related home in Spring Hill, Tennessee, and its stone barn. Signed lower right and dated March 1971. Sight: 43 1/2 in. W x 21 1/2 in. H. Frame: 49 in. W x 27 in. H. Note: this lot is accompanied by a circa 1945 brochure about Haynes Haven Stock Farm, "the home of World Renowned Haynes Peacock, other famous Tennessee Walking Horses, and American Saddle Horses." Haynes Haven is situated on the site of an 1860s home named Woodland, built by members of the Polk family. In the 1930s, W.M. Tolley operated a breeding farm on the property for trotters and pacers, but tragically, the mansion burned in 1937 during a renovation. Horse breeder Colonel Jack Haynes bought the property in 1938 and, using many architectural pieces salvaged from Woodland, built an antebellum style mansion he called Haynes Haven, depicted in this painting. Haynes was particularly known for his prize winning Tennessee Walking Horses including Strolling JIm, the first World Champion TN Walking Horse, and Haynes Peacock, the 1940 and 1941 World Grand Champion. The property was sold to brothers Harry and Wayne Pressnell in 1957 and then to Jesse Stalllings in 1970. (Stallings, who was the president of Capitol Airways, built an airstrip on the south end of the land). General Motors purchased the property from Stallings in the mid 1980s as part of a massive land purchase for its Saturn automotive plant, and continues to own and maintain the mansion today. It is occasionally open for public tours. Artist biography: Batsell Moore was born in Texas and studied art at Baylor University and Watkins Institute in Nashville (under Marion Cook). He specialized in farm and western landscapes and had a one man exhibit at the Parthenon in Nashville; he also exhibited in numerous galleries throughout the Southwest.
