Charles Johnson Post (New York, 1873-1956) oil on canvas Civil War themed painting, possibly an illustration piece. A group of four armed Confederate soldiers, clad in grey, flank an unarmed Union soldier who wears blue, possibly a prisoner of war. One of the CSA soldiers wears a red sash and examines a sword. The group stands in the entryway of a large home as sunlight enters the room from behind them and illuminates the space. A young girl with her back turned to the viewer examines the captured soldier. Two women at the top of a shadowy stairway appear distraught while an African American man is depicted crouching in the lower left corner. Signed Charles Johnson Post, lower right. With sticker affixed to verso reading "Their First Yankee by Charles Johnson Post." Housed in a contemporary giltwood frame. Sight: 27" H x 21 3/8" W. Frame: 33 1/2" H x 27 1/2" W. Note: Charles Johnson Post was an illustrator for the U.S. Army and military themes figured heavily in his work throughout his career. He studied at the Art Students League in New York City under the American Impressionist John Henry Twachtman, whose influence is readily apparent in Post's impressionistic interest in light and gestural brushwork, clearly illustrated in this painting. Post also studied at the Art Students League with Kenyon Cox, J. Carroll Beckwith, and Harper Pennington. Source: U.S. Army Center of Military History.
