Biography: Ohio born Clyde Singer was known for his paintings in the Social Realist style. In 1933 he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Art Students League in New York, receiving instruction from teachers including John Steuart Curry, Thomas Hart Benton, and Kenneth Hayes Miller, who heavily influenced his work. Singer returned to his home state to work, but exhibited nationally including at the Chicago Art Institute (where he won the Harris silver medal), the Whitney Museum annual, the Corcoran Biennial, and National Academy of Design exhibitions. He is said to have finished over 3,000 paintings in his career; most feature Ohio or New York subjects. From 1940 he also worked at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio, and acted as curator and co-director.
