Joseph Antonio Hekking (American, 1830-1903), oil on board mountain landscape painting, likely depicting the Adirondacks or White Mountains. The scene features a stream in the foreground, bordered by trees with Fall foliage, rocks, and mountains in the background, all beneath a blue, cloud-filled sky. Initialed lower right J A H. Housed under glass in a period gilt wood and gesso frame with linen mat. Sight: 8 3/4 in. H x 6 3/4 in. W. Framed: 19 1/2 in. H x 17 in. W. Biography: Joseph Antonio Hekking was born the Netherlands and emigrated to New York with his parents as a child. He was associated with the painters of the Hudson River School throughout his life. Hekking began exhibiting landscapes in New York in the 1850s including at the Crystal Palace Exhibition. In the 1860s he studied in France, but he returned to the U.S. to paint mountain scenes throughout New York and Connecticut. He exhibited widely throughout his career, including at the National Academy of Design, and his landscapes were acclaimed for their detailed naturalism. He also taught art, and served in the Union Army during the Civil War.
Painting is in overall very good condition and is housed under glass. Not examined out of the frame. Frame with scattered minor losses and repairs.
