D. Scott Rogers (Texas/Utah, b. 1960) bronze sculpture titled "Pendleton Girls" and depicting a group of five professional cowgirls standing in front of a central saddle resting on a naturalistic base. Signed on the lower back base edge "Copyright D. S. Rogers" and numbered 21/30. Mounted onto a shaped walnut base displaying a brass placard with title and artist information. Bronze retains the original 1998 receipt from Mountain Trails Galleries in Sedona, Arizona. Bronze measures 18 1/2" H (22" w/ base) x 21 1/2" W x 8" D.  Artist statement: "Beginning around 1895, through the mid-1930s, women competed in rodeos across the nation. They participated in calf-roping, bronco and steer riding, bull dogging, and trick riding. Some were experts in firearms and gave demonstrations (e. g. Annie Oakley). During the 1920s there was an outfit called THE PENDLETON DRUG COMPANY. They sponsored a number of these professional cowgirls. They had photographers take pictures (of the girls competing or stills) and placed these images on postcards, calendars, and other promotional material. The gals sponsored by the Pendleton Drug Company were often referred to as “THE PENDLETON GIRLS.” In sculpting this piece, I desired to depict a young woman about to compete at the Pendleton Roundup in 1921."
