Dale Chihuly (Tacoma, WA, b.1941) Large Macchia series sculpture in blue, pink, and white with a yellow lip rim. Signed and dated 1985 on the base near the pontil. 17 3/4 in. H x 32 in. Dia.
Biographical Note: Born in 1941 in Tacoma, Washington, Dale Chihuly discovered glass while studying interior design at the University of Washington. After graduating in 1965, he trained in the nation’s first glass program at the University of Wisconsin, earned an MFA at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), and later founded RISD’s glass program. A 1968 Fulbright took him to Venice’s Venini factory, where the team approach to glassblowing shaped his lifelong practice. In 1971, Chihuly co-founded the Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State, helping to establish studio glass as a fine art. His work--represented in over 200 museum collections--has earned numerous honors, including two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships and twelve honorary doctorates. Chihuly has produced signature series across decades--Cylinders and Baskets (1970s), Seaforms, Macchia, Persians, and Venetians (1980s), Niijima Floats and Chandeliers (1990s), and Fiori (2000s)--as well as major architectural installations worldwide. Highlights include Chihuly Over Venice (1995-96), Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem (1999), and the ongoing Garden Cycle exhibitions in botanical settings such as the New York Botanical Garden (2006, 2017). His long-term exhibition, Chihuly Garden and Glass, opened at Seattle Center in 2012. (Adapted from chihuly.com).
