Edith Blum (New York/France, 1892-1976) oil on board modernist still life painting of a bowl before a colorful landscape, with a body of water in the distance. Depicted with heavy, gestural brushwork. Housed in a carved gesso and giltwood frame with finished scroll and acanthus corners, with tan textile mat and ivory fillet. Sight: 29 3/4" H x 24 3/4" W, Frame 40 1/8"H x 35 1/4" W. Biography: Edith Blum studied at the Art Students League of New York, The National Academy in New York, The Julienne Academy in Paris and with Constance Curtis at the Rembrandt Studios. She began to exhibit her work regularly in the 1930's and she was included in the annual exhibitions of the National Association of Women Painters in 1935 and 1936, the National Academy in 1936, the Corcoran Biennial in Washington D.C. in 1937 and 1939, the Pennsylvania Academy in 1940, the Carnegie Institute's International Exhibition in 1943, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and the National Institute of Arts and Letters. Localized area of minor retouching and light staining, 8" L, center left. Otherwise very good condition. Frame has areas of gilt loss and abrasions.
