Edward S. Curtis (American, 1868-1952), "At the Old Well of Acoma," gold tone AKA Curt-Tone photograph on glass. An Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico, woman or girl sits on a rock and watches as a second figure dips a pottery vessel into a body of water, with rocky cliffs beyond. Signed and with Los Angeles ("LA") copyright insignia lower right. Housed in the original Curtis-designed “batwing” frame. Glass: 11 in. H x 14 in. W. Frame: 15 in. H x 18 3/4 in W. Negative date 1904. Note: This image was reproduced in "The North American Indian 1907-1930," portfolio 16, p. 571. Curtis's original caption in that publication reads: "Members of Coronado's army of explorers in 1540 and Espejo in 1583 noted the 'cisterns to collect snow and water' on the rock of Acoma." 

Condition

Orotone with minor abrasions with losses to edges, largest to lower left, 3/4 inch x 1/2 inch, plus fogginess along left edge that extends 1-inch into image. Minor cracking to frame, primarily to the corners, plus white pigment spatter along upper edge, primarily visible from above.
