F. Clifton (United Kingdom, active late 19th -early 20th C.) oil on canvas painting after Harry Hall, depicting a jockey astride the racehorse Blink Bonny, standing in a meadow with two other horses and riders in the distance. Signed verso with inscription, which reads, "Blink Bonny (Dam of Blair Atholl) winner of the Derby 1857". Owner Mr. W. L'Anson, sire Melbourne. Jockey: Charlton". Elaborate Belle Epoque style molded giltwood and composition frame with label en verso for Wakefield Scearce Galleries. Sight 19 in. H x 25 in. W. Frame: 26 1/2 in. H x 33 in. W. Note: this circa 1900 painting replicates an 1858 portrait of Blink Bonny by noted sporting artist Harry Hall (1814-1882). Blink Bonny was a British thoroughbred racehorse and bloodmare who won 14 of 20 races in her career from 1856 to 1858, including the Epsom Derby (Derby Stakes), The Oaks, and the Gimcrack Stakes. She died in 1862. 

Condition

Painting: craquelure throughout; stretcher marks with some wear top left corner; two splatters to background (sky area). Frame with age cracks and 1/2 area of loss to molding lower left corner.
