Frank Freed (American/Texas, 1906-1975), "Cafeteria of the Louvre," oil on canvas painting featuring three historical figures carrying meal trays in the cafeteria line of the Louvre Museum: King Charles 1st as depicted by Anthony van Dyck, The Countess del Carpio as depicted by Francisco Goya, and Federico da Montefeltro as depicted by Piero della Francesca. Signed lower left and housed in a parcel gilt and painted wood frame. Circa 1971. Sight: 23 3/8" H x 35 1/2" W. Framed: 29 3/4" H x 41 3/4" W.

Biography: Frank Freed was a self taught painter, cartoonist and writer. Born in 1906, Freed drew cartoons as a hobby, graduating from Harvard in 1927 and working as a life insurance salesman until enlisting in the Army in 1943. In 1948 Freed began to paint and began showcasing his works around Houston galleries, eventually expanding to include solo exhibitions domestically and abroad. Freed's work can be found in the collections of the Museum of Fine Art, Houston; the Marion Koogler McNay Art Museum in San Antonio; and the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas, Austin; and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.
