French Empire Marti et Cie gilt bronze figural mantel clock, depicting the Roman goddess Minerva holding a chisel and standing and leaning upon a rectangular case containing an enameled clock face, surmounted by a male Roman bust with art and foliate decoration, all resting on a rectangular base with toupee feet. Works marked en verso with the Marti et Cie medallion and numbered 4941 and 48. 18 1/4" H x 13 1/8" W x 4 1/2" D. 19th century.

Condition

Case clock in very good condition with a few areas of rubbing. Clock dial with losses and scattered craquelure. Clock escapement is missing the glass door. No winding key is retained and the clock is not presently functioning.

The estate of Thelma Schlicher, by descent from the estate of U.S. Ambassador Ronald Schlicher, Brentwood, TN. Note: Tennessee native Ron Schlicher entered the foreign service in 1982, working primarily in the Middle East. He returned to TN after retiring in 2011. Among his many diplomatic roles, he served as Ambassador to Cyprus, U.S. Principal Deputy Assistant Coordinator of Counterterrorism, and was director of the Iraq Task Force during the 2003 war with Iraq.
