Our July 6-7 Live Auction in Knoxville features more than 1,000 lots of Fine Art, Antiques and Jewelry from the founding family of Rogersville, TN, and from the historic Pinckney family of Charleston, SC; from the estate of William J. Eskind of Nashville; the living estate of Jerry Waters, Maryville, the estate of U.S. Ambassador Ron Schlicher of Brentwood, and from other fine estates and private and museum collections. Giambattista Tiepolo (Italy, 1696-1770) etching on laid paper depicting a cavalier who mounts his horse while accompanied by a servant or groom and barking dog. From the series Vari Capricci (Various Caprices), before 1750. Signed "Tiepolo" in the plate, lower center. With partial, unidentified watermark according to Galleria M. Arte, Padova, description. Ref.: De Vesme 12, Rizzi (1970) 37, Rizzi (1971) 38, Succi 50. Floated under glass in a beaded gilt wood frame with cream mat. Sheet: 5 1/2" H x 7" W. Frame: 13 3/4" H x 14 5/16" W. 

PROVENANCE: This work was purchased from the Galleria M. Arte in Padova, Italy in 1999. Copies of the gallery's receipt and certificate of authenticity are available to the winning bidder. 

Condition

A richly inked impression with strong contrasts. With crease running horizontally across sheet 1/4" from upper edge, dog-ear crease to lower left, 1 3/4" L, and faint horizontal crease to sky above horse's head, 3 1/2" L. Sheet is adhered to backing at upper left and right corners and lower center edge. Negligible foxing to cloud and sky at left. Minor soiling or handling wear along upper edge of sheet, especially corners.
