Harold Knight (England, 1874-1961) oil on canvas board portrait of a ballet dancer in a white tutu with pink leggings. She rests on a square stool while an artist who stands behind an easle in the background, possibly Dame Laura Knight, paints her. Singed "Harold Knight," lower left. Housed in a giltwood frame. Sight: 23" H x 17” W. Frame: 32 1/4" H x 26 1/4” W. Note: Dame Laura Knight (1877-1970), Harold's Knight's wife, frequently depicted dancers in her own art. As such, the present painting may show Laura at work in the background. Biographical note: "Harold Knight was a painter of portraits and interiors. Born in Nottingham, the son of an architect, he studied at Nottingham School of Art and for a year in Paris at the Academie Julian. On his return Knight settled at Staithes on the Yorkshire coast. He married Laura Johnson in 1903 and spent several years with her in Holland studying the Dutch masters, particularly Rembrandt and Vermeer. Knight exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1896 and at the International Society; he also exhibited with Laura Knight at the Leicester Galleries in 1906. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1928, and became a Royal Academician in 1937." (Source: National Portrait Gallery, London)
