Harry A. Jackson (American, 1924-2011) after Charles Russell (1864-1926), "Texas Longhorn," number 39, signed CMR with skull. One of approximately 60 cast by Jackson in 1972 for James Fowler from a plaster model originally made by Russell. The steer is branded FB for rancher Frank Bogart and rests atop a naturalistic ground. Mounted on an irregular 8-sided polished stone base (3/4 in. H) with bronze title plaque. Sculpture (not including stone base): 5 1/4 in. H x 6 1/2 in. W x 3 3/4 in. D. Overall: 6 in. H x 7 1/2 in. W x 4 1/4 in. D. Ref.: R-45 in Rick Stewart, "Charles M. Russell, Sculptor," 1994, p. 355. Biography: Artist Harry Jackson was born in Chicago, but at age 14 hopped a freight train to Wyoming to become a cowboy. He worked as a combat artist in World War II and studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts and Chicago Art Institute under the GI Bill after returning. In New York he befriended painters including Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning and was married briefly to Grace Hartigan. In the early 1950s he traveled to Europe to study the Old Masters. Although he produced a number of abstract works, he is most noted for his representational bronze sculptures that illustrate life in the Old West.
