Our July 6-7 Live Auction in Knoxville features more than 1,000 lots of Fine Art, Antiques and Jewelry from the founding family of Rogersville, TN, and from the historic Pinckney family of Charleston, SC; from the estate of William J. Eskind of Nashville; the living estate of Jerry Waters, Maryville, the estate of U.S. Ambassador Ron Schlicher of Brentwood, and from other fine estates and private and museum collections. 1st item: THE SCARLET LETTER, A ROMANCE by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Boston: Ticknor, Reed, and Fields, 1850. 2nd Printing of the First Edition, with Preface to the Second Edition. Hardcover octavo, 322 pages, plus 4-page publisher's advertisements dated May 1850 bound in at front. Title page printed in black and red-orange. Publisher's full brown cloth boards, with blindstamped central motif on covers, spine with gilt lettering. 7 3/8" H x 4 3/4" W. 2nd Item: A WHALING CRUISE TO BAFFIN'S BAY AND THE GULF OF BOOTHIA. AND AN ACCOUNT OF THE RESCUE OF THE CREW OF THE "POLARIS", by Albert Hastings Markham, London: Sampson Low, Marston, Low and Searle, 1874. 1st Edition, hardcover octavo, multiple illustrations and 7 whole page engravings, 319 pp plus 48 pages of publisher's advertising bound in back; with attached 11" x 16" fold-out map. Publisher's royal blue boards, with black and gilt stamped nautical illustration to front and spine, gilt lettering to spine. With original 1874 owner's gift notation on half title page. 8 3/4" H x 5 3/4" W.

PROVENANCE: By descent in the historic Pinckney family of Runnymede Plantation, South Carolina.

Condition

1st Item (Hawthorne): Overall very good condition, some foxing and toning throughout, penciled owner's name title page, rounded cover corners, slight chipping top of spine. 2nd Item (Whaling): Fine overall condition with rubbing and bumping to covers, light toning and foxing throughout, spine slightly loose with covers starting to separate.
