THE BRITISH ESSAYISTS, by James Ferguson, London: J. Richardson And Co, et al., 1823. Second edition complete in 40 volumes; 12mo., bound in 1/2 leather and marbled paper covers, spines with gilt titles and raised ribs; each volume with bookplate of John Julius Pringle. A collection of essays from prominent 19th C. English magazines, including The Tatler, The Spectator, The Guardian, The Rambler, and The Observer. Note: John Julius Pringle, Sr. (1753 - 1843), a notable figure in South Carolina's history, was a Charleston lawyer; from 1792 to 1808, Pringle served as attorney-general of South Carolina.
PROVENANCE: By descent in the historic Pinckney family of Runnymede Plantation, South Carolina.
Condition
Each volume in very good condition, with slight scuffing to covers and toning to pages.
