1st item: Japanese scroll painting rendered in ink, watercolor, and gouache, depicting two birds resting together in a pine tree. Inscribed with two red seals lower left. Silk brocade borders with laid paper backing. Retains the custom storage box. Painting: 49 1/2" H x 19 1/4" W Overall: 72 1/4" H x 25 1/4" W. Box measures: 29 1/4" L x 3 1/2" W. Early 20th century. 2nd item: Utagawa Yoshitora (Japan, active c.1836-1887) Edo-period woodblock print entitled "Battle of the Southeast Gate of the Palace," from "The Tales of the Hogen and Heiji Wars," depicting samurai fighting before a large building. Two sheets from the three-sheet triptych. Floated under plexiglass in a speckled giltwood frame with ivory fabric mat. Sight: 14 1/4" H x 19 1/2" W. Framed: 23 1/2 " H x 29 " W. 19th century.

Condition

1st item: Overall toning to paper with some minor scattered horizontal creasing and a few areas of spotting. Damp staining to lower brocade border resulting in white residue. 2nd item: Fading, creasing, and soiling throughout. Pinpoint holes to left-hand sheet and one 1/4" hole, center left.
