John Edward Heliker (American/New York, 1909 - 2000) modernist oil on canvas landscape titled "New England House", depicting a whitewashed house surrounded by multiple outbuildings with two trees in the foreground. Rendered in muted shades of grey, blue, lavender, green, pink and white. Signed "Heliker" lower right. Two Kraushaar Galleries of New York labels en verso with title and artist information. Housed in a simple wood frame with metal edge, wide linen mat and wood liner. Sight: 25 3/4" H X 24" W. Framed: 32 1/4" H x 30 3/4" W. Biographical Note: John Heliker was an artist whose work evolved over the years from Cubism to Realism. He studied at the Art Students League with Kimon Nicolaides, Thomas Hart Benton, and Boardman Robinson in the late 1920s. He won a Prix de Rome in 1948 and spent the next five summers in Italy. In the 1950s, Heliker received a Guggenheim Fellowship and taught at Columbia University, the Art Students League, and Parsons. He was a founding member of the New York Studio School with Mercedes Matter, Alex Katz, Leland Bell, Philip Guston, and Nicholas Carone in the 1960s. Heliker became an Associate of the National Academy of Design, New York City, in 1979, and an Academician in 1981. He exhibited extensively at the Kraushaar Galleries in New York City. Beginning in 1945, he had nineteen shows there, including his final in 2000 shortly before his death at age ninety-one. The Whitney Museum mounted a retrospective of his work in 1968.
