Sublett was a founding member of the art group, "The Knoxville Seven," a progressive group working from 1955-1965 the members of which produced some of the first abstract expressionist art in Tennessee. In 1982, he retired from teaching and, in 1984, he opened the Sublett Gallery in Knoxville. In 1991, "The Unseen Carl Sublett" was the first exhibition at the new Knoxville Museum of Art. Sublett won numerous awards for his paintings and was a member of the National Academy of Design. His works are in the collections of the National Academy of Design, Knoxville Museum of Art, Tennessee State Museum, and Cheekwood, Nashville. (Adapted from The Tennessee Arts Commission).
