Large Carl Sublett (Tennessee, 1919-2008) oil on canvas abstract painting, "Beach, II," 1961. Rendered primarily in white and shades of blue with red underpaint and passages of impasto throughout. Signed and dated lower right. Old, likely original label with title and artist information affixed to stretcher along with later Sublett label dated "1990." Housed in a simple wooden frame. Canvas: 49 3/4 in. H x 43 3/4 in. W. Framed: 50 3/4 in. H x 44 3/4 in. W. Biography: Carl Sublett studied Art History at the American Academy in Florence, Italy, after serving as a sergeant in World War II. He moved to Knoxville in 1954, where he studied with Kermit Ewing and eventually became a Professor of Fine Art at the University of Tennessee. Sublett was a founding member of the art group, "The Knoxville Seven," a progressive group working from 1955-1965 the members of which produced some of the first abstract expressionist art in Tennessee. In 1982, he retired from teaching and, in 1984, he opened the Sublett Gallery in Knoxville. In 1991, "The Unseen Carl Sublett" was the first exhibition at the new Knoxville Museum of Art. Sublett won numerous awards for his paintings and was a member of the National Academy of Design. His works are in the collections of the National Academy of Design, Knoxville Museum of Art, Tennessee State Museum, and Cheekwood, Nashville. (Adapted from The Tennessee Arts Commission).

Condition

Overall very good condition. With craquelure throughout, primarily to impasto.
