Larry Rivers (American, 1923-2002), "Booth, Lincoln, Ford," collage with pencil and colored pencil on paper depicting President Abraham Lincoln's assassination by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theatre, Washington D.C.,1994. Titled upper center, and signed and dated "Larry Rivers '94," lower right. With Larry Rivers and Marlborough Gallery, New York, inventory stickers affixed to backing along with biographical note. Floated under plexiglass in a simple wooden frame with white mat. Sheet: 10 1/8" H x 6 1/8" W. Frame: 20" H x 15 3/4" W. Biography: An artist, musician, poet, painter, photographer, and sculptor, Rivers began his career under the influence of Abstract Expressionism, but came to prominence in the 1960s with his work using images and photographs from commercial media. Often criticized for his sculpture and painting parodies of works by various masters, his versatile work combined elements of Pop Art and Dada, and frequently utilized film and video.
