Ludwig Knaus (France/Germany, 1829-1910), "The Quarrel," oil on canvas genre painting depicting two men brawling in a tavern. One of the quarrelers lies in pain the ground as a distraught woman appears to try to intercede with the standing fighter, who is illuminated by the light from a nearby window. Musicians and other figures watch from a dais and staircase in a corner of the room, and chairs and tablewares lay broken on the ground. Signed "L. Knaus" lower left corner. Housed in a molded giltwood and composition Rococo style frame. Sight: 18 in W x 10 1/2 in H. Frame: 24 in W x 17 in D.
Condition
Lined, with some retouch to background, upper right (2" square), and to a 3" linear area upper left. Professionally conserved by Cumberland Art Conservation, Nashville, 1994. A copy of the conservation treatment report is available on request. Some small losses and minor repairs to frame.
