Northern European school pair of oil on panel bust-length pendant portraits depicting a man and a woman in fine clothing, likely Gustavus Adolphus or Gustaf II Adolf, King of Sweden (r. 1611-1632), and Queen Maria Eleonora of Brandenburg, 17th century. Item 1: Painting of a bearded man, likely Gustavus Adolphus, shown in three-quarters pose with an elaborate lace ruff and sash. After the 1633 engraving by Willem Jacobsz Delff (1580-1638), itself after the original portrait by Michiel Jansz van Miereveld (1567-1641). With label en verso that reads: "From Picture Gallery." Housed in a wooden frame with gilt fillet. Panel: 12 1/4" H x 10 1/8" W. Framed: 16 3/4" H x 14 3/4" W. Item 2: Painting of a woman with dark, curly hair shown in three-quarter pose with red and gold slashed sleeves. She wears a black headpiece and veil along with large pearl earrings. Housed in a wooden frame with gilt fillet. Panel: 12 1/8" H x 10 1/8" W. Framed: 16 3/4" H x 14 3/4" W.  

Condition

1st item with repaired, stablized split bisecting panel through foreheard plus stablized crack bisecting panel below lip and 3" crack at lower right, above shoulder, also stabilized. Sctattered retouching from at least two restorations, largest area to split and especially forehead. 2nd item with scattered, minor retouching especially to left cheek, 2" x 1/2," plus negligible frame abrasion. See U/V photography. Frames with minor abrasions and gilt loss.
