Rafael Coronel (Mexican, 1932-2019), "Anonimo", aka "Renaissance Person in Blue," oil crayon and graphite on paper, depicting the profile of a man in Renaissance clothing. Signed and dated "Rafael Coronel '69" lower left with possible title. Housed under glass in an ebonized frame with gilt molded edges and a beige linen mat. Sight: 40 in. H x 29 1/2 in. W. Frame: 47 in. H x 37 1/2  in. W. This lot is accompanied by the original 1971 sales receipt from the Bernard Lewin Galleries, Beverly HIlls, California, and an exhibit catalog picturing this work, along with some additional correspondence between the gallery, the consignor and his parents (the original purchasers of the work) including a statement of authenticity from Bernard Lewin. Biography: Rafael Coronel was raised in an artistic family. His grandfather was a church family and his brother, Pedro, was a fellow painter.  Rafael Coronel studied at the National School of Architecture, the High American School Academy and La Esmeralda. He worked for twenty years in the workshop of Diego Rivera, who became his father in law when he married Ruth Rivera. He is known for his paintings of "melancholic essences" and said his intention was "to show the particularity of the human being without as much covering as the muralists did, capturing characters whose essence is frozen in time." There appears to be a 2 1/2 in. repair to the center of the paper, near the subject's arm, with scratch just below. Rippling to paper. Not examined out of frame. Frame with some scattered scuffs.
