Virginia Federal bowfront chest of drawers, mahogany and figured mahogany veneers, with poplar and yellow pine secondary. Consisting of a single board top over a conforming case with two short dovetailed drawers over three full-length graduated dovetailed drawers, flanked by reeded stiles terminating in a lunette design at the base, and resting on turned and tapered feet fitted with castors. Illegible signature en verso. 44 1/8 in. H x 42 5/8 in. W x 22 3/4 in. D. Circa 1820.

Condition

Overall good condition with minor surface wear. Brasses are not original. One backboard appears to be an old replacement, minor buildup of drawer sides, locks missing.

Provenance

Living Estate of Sally Johnson Harlan. By descent from her grandparents, Dr. William Leroy Broun and his wife Sally Fleming (married Chantilly, VA., 1859), and likely descended from her family (the Coleman/Minor family of Virginia through her mother, Mary Orrell Coleman), or from his parents, Edwin Conway Broun (1782-1839) and Elizabeth Channel Broun (1802-1838), who married in Middleburg, VA, in 1819. ( Note: Dr. William Leroy Broun (1827-1902) headed the Confederate Arsenal at Richmond, VA during the Civil War. Later he was president of the Georgia Agricultural and Mechanical College (a branch of the University of Georgia, 1872-1875) and president of what is now known as Auburn University in Alabama (1882-1903).
