Tennessee white on white coverlet or counterpane, attributed to Susannah King Alison (Sullivan County, TN, 1779-1851). Consisting of two 40-inch white cotton weft-loop woven panels sewn in the center and decorated with a central, stylized medallion and repeating geometric designs on four sides. Finished with a hand-woven 6-inch fringe attached on three sides. "Susannah Alison, Her Counterpin, June 16 1817" is woven in the lower right panel. The top is finished front to back with a rolled hem. Main weaving: 80 in. x 92 in. Fringe is 6 in. Note: This coverlet was found in Sullivan County, Tennessee. Susannah King Alison (1779-1851) was the daughter of William Kirby King (1752-1840) and Elizabeth Sharp King (1749-1829). William was born in Middletown, PA, and served in North Carolina as a Private in the Revolutionary War under Colonels Christy and Taylor. He also served as a spy under General Russell. He received 640 acres of land for his service in the war.  Susannah married Finley Alison (1774-1833). 

Condition

Weaving in very good condition for its age. Some staining throughout and scattered losses to the fringe. Cleaning is recommended. Staining along the seam line.
