Stanley John (Jan) Twardowicz (American, 1917 - 2008) oil on canvas abstract expressionist painting titled "Number 38", 1958. Layers of forms rendered in black, grey, and white merge on a red-orange field.  Gallery label with artist information en verso.  Housed in a simple black painted wood frame. Sight: 58 in. H x 46 in. W. Framed: 59 1/8 in. H x 47 in. W. Artist Biography: Stanley John (Jan) Twardowicz studied at the Meinzinger Art School in Detroit and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and became known as a Color Field and Abstract Expressionist painter and photographer. In the 1950s he became associated with the Cedar Tavern group of artists including Pollack, Kline and De Kooning. During this time he had one-man shows and participated in group shows at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He was represented in the Museum of Modern Art's travelling exhibition "Young American Painters. Between 1958 and 1970 the Peridot Gallery in New York presented annual one-man shows of Twardowicz's work. Twardowicz also participated in numerous major group shows at institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art. (Source: The Smithsonian Archives of American Art).
