General Smith suffered a significant head wound during the Battle of Nashville and as a result, spent the latter part of his life confined to a mental institution, where he penned this rambling, mostly nonsensical letter. He does make brief mention of a connection between himself and Josephine: "I value the old block of your house because it was made by some of my kinfolk the silversmith Elliston Josephine's Farrel's Grandfather" [Joseph Thorpe Elliston, a silversmith who also served as Nashville's mayor]. Isham Harris signed receipt of the Resignation of James Edmund Bailey on Military and Financial Board letterhead dated Nashville, Dec. 20, 1861. Bailey resigned in order to organize a company of soldiers that would become Company A, 49th Infantry Regt. TN Volunteers. After the war, Bailey became a U.S. Senator. 5th item: Illegibly signed and partially printed ticket allowing Mrs. Elizabeth C.
