1st Item: John Lodge (England, 1735-1796) engraved map, "An Exact Map of North and South Carolina, & Georgia, with East and West Florida, from the latest Discoveries," 1778. With the southeastern colonies, from Virginia and Maryland to Florida and the Bahamas and west to Louisiana. Also included is Dr. Thomas Walker's 1750 settlement along the Cumberland River in Tennessee. With Catawba, Cherokee, Maskoke or Creek, Choctaw, and Chickasaw nations noted. Published in William Russell's THE HISTORY OF AMERICA, FROM ITS DISCOVERY BY COLUMBUS TO THE CONCLUSION OF THE LATE WAR (London: Fielding and Walker, 1778). Housed under glass in a giltwood frame with tan mat and French line. Sight: 8 3/8 in. H x 10 3/16 in. W. Frame: 14 1/4 in. H x 15 9/16 in. W. Note: "Thomas Walker, a colonial Virginian, significantly marked Tennessee through his discovery and naming of the Cumberland River in 1750 and his establishment of the North Carolina-Virginia western line in 1780." 2nd Item: Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (France, 1703-1772) engraved map, "Carte De La Floride, de la Louisiane et Pays Voisins," 1757. An early map of French Louisiana that includes area from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico, with New Mexico to the west. Housed under glass in a giltwood and painted frame with tan mat and French line. Sight: 9 in. H x 12 5/16 in. W. Framed: 15 in. H x 17 3/4 in. W.
Condition
1st item with approximately six-inch crease or expertly repaired tear to lower left, in Louisiana and the Gulf of Mexico. Two minor, primarily marginal tears along upper edge, between 85 and 80 longitude lines, and and third minor, primarily marginal tear to lower left, below the 30 latitude line. Approximately six-inch very faint crease that extends from the Cumberland River to Cape Canaveral, Florida, and approximately five-inch crease to lower right, in southern Florida and Bahamas, are possibly inherent. A speck of foxing or accretion to St. Mary's River in southern Georgia, near the Atlantic coast. 2nd item in overall very good condition, with central fold line as issued. Not examined out of frames.
