1st Item: John Rogers (American, 1829 - 1904) painted plaster figural sculpture titled "Union Refugees," depicting a Southern Unionist family fleeing to the North. The father is carrying a gun with a small bundle of belongings, suggesting all that the family had left behind, as his wife leans against him and their son attempts to comfort her with a bouquet of flowers. Signed and titled on the base. 22 1/2" H x 12" W x 9" D. Late 19th century. 2nd Item: John Rogers (American, 1829 - 1904) painted post-Civil War plaster figural titled "Taking the Oath and Drawing Rations" depicting a Southern woman forced to take an oath of allegiance to the Union in order to secure food for her hungry family. Signed and titled on the base. Design patented in 1866. 22 3/4" H x 12" W x 8" D. Late 19th century. Note: Rogers began this work in 1863, just after the announcement of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Condition

Overall very good condition. 1st Item (Refugees) one very small abrasion to man's neck. Both with later paint.
