A large Walter Hollis Stevens (Tennessee, 1927-1980) abstract oil on canvas painting titled "Pebble Head" depicting the shoreline of Pebble Beach located in Maine. Rendered in muted earth tone colors. Signed and dated in "Stevens '61" lower left. Additionally signed "W.H. Stevens", titled, and dated en verso of stretcher and on a label en verso. Housed in a gilt and ebonized wood frame. Sight: 39 1/2" H x 49 1/4" W. Framed: 44 1/2" H x 54 1/4" W. Provenance: Ex- TN Senator Howard and Joy Baker, Jr. collection.
Biography: (TN Arts Commission) One of the acclaimed Knoxville Seven in the 1960's, Stevens was fresh on the scene of abstract expressionism for East Tennessee and an early faculty member of the University of Tennessee's art department. His work resides in numerous collections including the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Knoxville Museum of Art, Carnegie Visual Arts Center in Alabama, the Mint Museum in Charlotte and others.
Condition
Painting in overall very good condition. A couple of very small abrasions to upper right quadrant of canvas. A couple of minor abrasions to the frame.
