1940s Westfield Compax collapsible bicycle manufactured in Westfield, Massachusetts, with original paint. Serial #K161883, rear hub stamped "New Departure, Model D, Made in U.S.A." Measures approximately 71 in. L and 36 in. H. Note: A U.S. Patent was filed on Dec. 23, 1937 for "the improvement of collapsible bicycles" with six unique features to allow a bike to fold into a small space for easy storage and transport, including folding handlebars and a take-apart frame. The first Westfield made Compax bikes went into production in the 1940s. Around the same time, the US military had been experimenting with take-apart bikes. The Marines used a Westfield made Compax in their Paratrooper trials, leading to the Paratrooper name and legend, which Westfield eagerly played up in their advertising. The U.S. Military never actually approved these bikes for paratrooper use, but many were purchased by the military for use on bases.

Seat is dry rotted and has holes. Retains most of original paint on frame. Rust on wheels and spokes.
