American School, first half 19th century, oil on canvas painting of President Andrew Jackson (1767-1845), after an original circa 1835 portrait by Ralph Eleaser Whiteside Earl (1788-1838). Jackson is shown in three-quarters, bust-length view, wearing a black ascot and black coat with red collar and gold clasps and looks to the viewer's right. Unsigned. Housed in a giltwood frame with foliate corners and oval sight edge. Canvas: 26 in. H x 21 in. W. Sight: 23 1/4 in. H x 19 1/4 in. W. Framed: 35 1/4 in. H x 31 in. W. Note: This early copy after Earl resembles at least three Earl paintings created during Jackson's presidency and was likely based on one of them, or a period print.  

Overall very good condition on the original canvas, with craqueleure throughout. 5 1/2 in. x 4 1/2 in. repaired tear with retouching at lower left, primarily to collar. 3/4 in. x 3/4 in. abrasion with retouching to lower center, near sight edge, also in collar. See UV photography. Some minor areas of loss near edges, beneath frame. Frame with abrasions and losses, especially to corners. 

Found in a Pennsylvania Estate.
