Collection of documents and autographs for notable Tennessee political figures. 1st-36th items: group of documents dated 1838-1919 containing signatures of men who served as Governor of Tennessee: Newton Cannon, James C. Jones (7), Aaron Venable Brown (3), William Trousdale (2), William Bowen Campbell; Isham G. Harris; Dewitt Clinton Senter(2); James D. Porter; Albert S. Marks; Alvin Hawkins (2); Robert Love Taylor (2); Peter Turney; Benton McMillin (2); Tom C. Rye (6); Malcolm Rice Patterson; Ben W. Hooper (2); Albert Houston Roberts. Most are routine legal and business documents and not all men were serving as governor when the papers were signed. Includes a typed letter with Malcolm Patterson's signature on Executive Chamber letterhead explaining his views on the subject of guaranteeing state banking deposits; documents commissioning justices of the peace by Jones, Hawkins, Marks, Porter, McMillan, Senter, Turney and Taylor; Aaron Brown letter to Geo. Smith of Memphis encouraging him to apply to for a position as Agent in Memphis, various early land documents. 37th through 45th items: Various letters and clipped pieces of paper dated 1819-1963 containing signatures of Senator John Bell (2), U.S. Secretary of State Cordell Hull (2, one possibly secretarial), US Postmaster General Cave Johnson, Senator Estes Kefauver (3), and Judge John Overton (1819 signed check). 46th item: Pamphlet: FREEDOM'S NAMESAKE, or THE ORIGIN AND HISTORIC IMPORT OF THE NAME CUMBERLAND by John M. Gaut, 1901.

Condition

All items encapsulated or housed in plastic sleeves, in overall good condition with expected age related condition issues: toning, fading, light foxing, discoloration, small tears and losses, scattered pencil inscriptions.
