James Grant (American/California, 1924-1997), "Collage with Purple Dots," mixed media on board abstract expressionist collage featuring complex earth-toned forms intermingled with bright red splotches and purple dots. Unsigned. Plastic label en verso with artist name, title and date 1963. Tan linen mat and goldtone metal frame. Sight - 21 1/2" x 13 1/2". Frame - 28" x 20". Biography: James Grant was born in Los Angeles and received his undergraduate degree in Engineering from USC. He then earned an M.F.A. at the Jepson Art Institute in Los Angeles, studying under Rico Lebrun. He taught for 9 years, starting in 1950, at Pomona College in Claremont, CA, and exhibited at a number of places including at the Pasadena Art Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum, the Oakland Art Museum, and the San Francisco Museum of Art (now S.F. MoMA). He then moved to Rome for two years where he began to experiment with collages, using paint and fabric, and had a solo exhibition at the Galleria Pogliani in Rome. Grant's work progressed steadily to include collages with glass and plastic materials and ultimately he moved into sculpture. He was included in more than 13 solo exhibits and more than 30 group exhibits including at the Bertha Schaefer Gallery in New York, the Stanford Art Gallery and the Oakland Museum of Art. Painting - very good condition. Mat is dingy, wear and small separation to frame.
